Sahara Photography Workshops: Frequently Asked Questions

Astrophotography, the Milky Way, camera equipment, experience levels and travel arrangements: find essential answers to help you prepare for your photography experience in the Tunisian Sahara.

Preparing for the Experience

Before Heading
Beneath the Stars.

Photographing the Sahara at night involves more than choosing the right camera settings. The location, weather, position of the stars, equipment and preparation in the field all contribute to creating a photograph.

In this FAQ, I answer the questions I am most often asked before joining a Sky of the Sahara workshop: photography experience, equipment, nightscape techniques, shooting sessions and travel arrangements.

Details specific to each trip are provided in its programme, as itineraries and conditions may vary from one workshop to another.

01 · Sahara Photography Workshops

Who are Sky of the Sahara workshops designed for?

My workshops are designed for photographers who want to discover or develop their night photography and nightscape skills while exploring the landscapes of the Sahara.

The aim is to work in the field, from planning a composition to capturing the photograph, while considering the night sky, the landscape and the conditions encountered.

Do I need previous astrophotography experience?
Advanced astrophotography experience is not essential. However, I recommend being familiar with your camera's main functions and knowing how to shoot in manual mode. The required experience level and any prerequisites are specified for each workshop.
Can beginners join a night photography workshop?
Yes, depending on the programme. My workshops can help you understand how to prepare a night photography session, choose camera settings, focus accurately and compose images that connect the night sky with the foreground. If you are unsure about your experience level, contact me before booking.
How many participants are there in each group?
I intentionally keep groups small so that I can provide attentive guidance in the field. The exact number of participants depends on the workshop and is specified in the programme for each session.
Where can I find upcoming workshop dates and prices?
Upcoming sessions are presented on the Workshops page . To check availability, request pricing information or ask a question about a particular session, you can also contact me directly .

02 · Astrophotography & Nightscape Photography

What is nightscape photography?
Nightscape photography combines the night sky with a landscape or an element of the surrounding environment. Rather than photographing the Milky Way in isolation, the composition includes mountains, architecture, villages or cultural heritage to create a complete image.
How do you prepare for Milky Way photography?

Preparation begins before nightfall. I study the location, look for an interesting foreground, anticipate the position of the night sky and plan the composition.

Camera settings come next. This preparation helps create a photograph in which the landscape and the stars work together.

Do you use a star tracker?
Depending on the photograph I want to create and the conditions, I may use different techniques. Tracking the stars with a star tracker is one option, but it is not essential for every nightscape photograph.
Can I photograph the Milky Way without a star tracker?
Yes. Night photography can also be practised without tracking the stars. The choice of technique depends on the available equipment, the foreground, the composition and the photographic result you want to achieve.
Are night photography sessions guaranteed?
No. Photographing the night sky depends on weather conditions, visibility and the circumstances encountered in the field. When possible, I adapt the programme to seek the most favourable shooting conditions.
Where can I see photographs taken under the Sahara sky?
You can explore a selection of nightscape photographs and desert landscapes in the Sky of the Sahara Gallery .

03 · Photography Equipment

What camera do I need for night sky photography?
A camera that allows manual control of exposure, ISO sensitivity, aperture and focusing is a good starting point. Specific requirements may vary depending on the techniques covered during the workshop.
What lens should I use for Milky Way photography?
A fast wide-angle lens is particularly suitable for nightscape photography. It allows you to include a large area of the sky while leaving enough space for the landscape or architecture used as the foreground.
Is a tripod essential for astrophotography?
Yes, in most situations. Night photography requires exposure times that make handheld shooting difficult. A stable tripod helps maintain the composition and minimise camera movement.
What photography equipment should I bring to the desert?
In addition to your camera, lenses and tripod, you should generally bring enough batteries, memory cards, a headlamp and equipment suited to the conditions. I provide a more detailed equipment list according to each workshop programme.
Where can I learn the basics before joining a workshop?
My Tutorials cover camera techniques, photography equipment, astrophotography and image processing. They can help you prepare for your first sessions before practising these skills in the field.

04 · Tunisian Sahara & Travel Arrangements

Where do the photography workshops take place?
I design Sky of the Sahara programmes around locations selected for their photographic potential. In Tunisia, the Dahar region and southern landscapes offer mountains, traditional architecture and open spaces that can provide compelling foregrounds for nightscape photography.
Why photograph the Dahar region of Tunisia?
The Dahar region brings together rocky landscapes, villages, architecture and cultural heritage that offer many opportunities for composition. Its photographic appeal goes beyond the night sky: the landscape itself plays an essential role in creating the image.
What does a typical workshop day look like?
The schedule depends on the programme and conditions. During the day, we may explore locations, scout potential compositions and prepare our shots. Night photography sessions are then organised when conditions allow us to work in the field.
How are photography locations selected?
A good nightscape location needs to work both on the ground and in the sky. When preparing sessions, I consider the landscape, cultural heritage, orientation, foreground and composition possibilities.
How is transportation organised during the workshops?
Transportation arrangements depend on each trip. They are explained in the relevant workshop programme so that participants understand the planned organisation before departure.
